Cinderella Around the World
How can you use the Discovery Education Board Builder and/or Glogster in your classroom this school year to provide students the opportunity to develop their respectful and ethical minds?
Discovery Education Board Builder and Glogster are great opportunities to send students on “virtual field trips” to further develop their respectful and ethical minds. I chose to use multi-cultural versions of Cinderella stories to teach students that one thing can be viewed in several different ways. I also chose to use multi-cultural Cinderella stories because I feel it is important for my students to learn about different cultures and be open to them as they prepare to enter the “real-world”. In the real-world, young adults come across a variety of different cultures and ethnicities. At the same time, they have to synthesize and use what they’ve learned in their schooling to become educated, open-minded citizens. They will work hard to learn that people may have different views on things. They will work even harder to learn to listen first, rather than respond. As a reading teacher, I always thought that incorporating the MANY versions of Cinderella stories is a great way to teach our students to develop respectful and ethical minds. There are also several other books that can be used to model and teach these higher-level concepts to our students. Using Cinderella books as “mentor texts” is a great way to encourage our students to develop respectful and ethical minds. Although I chose to use Glogster, I have also used Discovery Education Board Builder in the past. Both of these applications are easy for students to navigate and to also create project-based learning to deepen their understanding of content areas. I think utilizing applications such as these are great ways to help students synthesize and make real-world connections. I will continue to implement Glogster and Discovery Education Board Builder the remainder of the school year with my students. It is my hope that they can develop respectful and ethical minds by learning about the world hands-on. These project-based learning opportunities are also great opportunities for our students to practice their technology-safety skills. As teachers we can easily model and keep an eye on their online presence/interactions. We can positively encourage them to continue exploring Web 2.0 or politely correct their negative interactions in a non-threatening way. I believe that Discovery Education Board Builder and Glogster are two great tools for our educators to become well-versed with. They open up the door to a “flat classroom”, and enhance the development of our “flipped classrooms”. (Word count 394)
